They knew their spacesuits would save them from the great heat outside the spaceship. They had put their air tanks on their backs so that they could breathe when they walked out on to the moon. When they were ready, they slowly opened the door of their small spaceship. Neil Armstrong stepped out and started to climb down the short ladder .As he put his left foot down on the moon, he said ‘’ that’s one small step for man –one giant leap for mankind.’’. At the age of thirty eight, Neil Armstrong had become the first person to set foot on the moon.

Would you ever try to climb a mountain? How about five or six mountains?
Eric Wiehenmayer has already done all of that, and he has been blind since he was 13. At 16, he knew he wanted a life of adventure. He climbed rocks, hiked, skied and skydived. But that wasn’t enough. Eric decided he wanted to climb the highest mountain in each of the seven continents .As time passed; Eric managed to climb six of them, including Mount Everest in May, 2001.

As our spaceship got nearer to Jupiter, the orange and yellow surface of the planet filled the ship’s windows.

It was an awesome sight. Now we were passing Jupiter’s rings and some of Jupiter’s moons. The moon Io looked like a giant pizza, covered with red, white and brown spots. On it, volcanoes were throwing out plumes of red. In contrast, the moon Europa had a dead, icy surface .Suddenly; ahead we could see Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. This large windstorm was moving swiftly. What is the Earth made of?

The Earth is a big ball or sphere , made mostly of rock .Inside the earth , the rock is melted , but the outside cover is hard rock .Less than one third of Earth’s surface is land and more than two-thirds are water.

To go into a little more detail, the outside of the Earth is a crust of rock about 10 to 30 miles thick. The high parts of this crust are the continents and the low parts of it hold the waters of the oceans and the great inland seas and lakes.

The crust of the Earth has two layers. The upper layer, which makes the continents, is made granite. Under the layer of granite is a thick layer of very hard rock called basalt .Scientists believes that at the core of the Earth is a huge ball of molten iron, with a diameter of around 4, 000 miles.

The day I came face to face with a tiger

Tony Russell describes how the sight of a tiger in Nepal will stay with him forever

Last year, I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it’s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it’s difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal to go with me.

We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left camp with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle, there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to get a better view, but it’s unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day.

Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger’s lunch. Suddenly I started to feel very frightened.

We heard the tiger a second before we saw it .It jumped out like a flash of lightening. I looked into his eyes and face and saw right down the animal’s throat. It grabbed Kamal’s leg between its teeth but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night, it was impossible to sleep.

First, your heart begins to pound as you look over the edge of the bridge. Your toes are hanging over a 300 – foot (91.4m) drop to the river below. Then you hear the other jumpers behind you .They begin to chant the countdown. "Five, four, three, Two, One!" . You think, OK, here we go, this is it .Suddenly, you feel more alert and alive than ever before. Then…BUNGEE! You leap off the bridge and dive to the river below. All of a sudden the river comes rushing up in front of you. You start thinking, oh, no! I’m going to hit the water! Then a pull from the bungee cord slows you down. You come to a stop just above the surface of the river.

Stephen Su, a teenager from Taiwan, still remembers his first time. "The most memorable seconds were right before and after I jumped. Would I go bungee jumping again? Yes! It’s thrilling!"
