Examination 2

A Cheap Bicycle Repair Stand & Basic Bicycle Maintenance
1. Bicycle parts include many nuts and bolts. Some people wonder which way to turn them on their bike. Most of these things on a bicycle, as well as on other household machines, turn like a jar lid. If you turn counter-clockwise, they loosen or come off, and like putting the lid back on a pickle jar, when you turn them clockwise, they tighten.
2. How tight do you tighten them? There’s no easy answer. Do be careful about breaking things. A great idea would be to buy a broken bike at a sale for a few dirhams. Tighten and loosen its parts several times. Finally, go ahead and tighten them until they break on your junk bike to find out what the limits are.
3. Some bike parts are particularly demanding in having just the right tightness. When in doubt, ask an experienced friend to check your work.
Cheap Bike Repair Stand
4. Here’s a way to make a neat bike stand. Since you have to spin the bike wheels for certain parts of the tune-up, and since you probably don’t want to crawl on the floor to work on the lower parts of your bike, find a place where you can tie ropes to the ceiling. In your garage there may be rafters that you can screw hooks into. Install two hooks about six feet apart and tie ropes to them. Then tie one rope under the seat of your bike, and the other around the handlebar stem. Tie the bike up at a nice working height. If the hooks are far enough apart, the front wheel naturally tends to stay straight ahead, instead of flopping to one side.
Basic Bicycle Maintenance
5 To keep your bike in good condition you should clean it and oil it regularly but espe-cially after long journeys. Check the tires and spokes for general wear and tear. Keep your bicycle repair kit with you on the bike every time you ride. This should include: a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a torch.

Part B. Reading 2

Read the selection below. Then answer the questions.

BASIC FIRST AID DOES SAVE LIVES

Many accidents in the home turn into major tragedies because too many people do not have the simple skills needed to deal with a crisis when it occurs. If everyone had a basic knowledge of first aid it would save lives.

Do you know what to do when someone has a major wound? What action should you take when someone has been electrocuted? What is CPR and how do you administer it?

Too many people in the UAE cannot answer these questions positively and as a result many people’s lives are being put at risk from a lack of rudimentary first aid knowledge.

Would you feel helpless if one of your friends or relatives had an accident and you could not assist them? Alternatively how would you feel if you dealt with the problem coolly, confidently and proficiently?

Basic first aid is not a difficult skill to acquire and it takes only a few hours to learn. A great deal of it, like applying pressure to a wound, elevating it above the heart, is very often just plain common sense. As is keeping the patient calm and being calm yourself. The problem is that when an accident occurs, because we have not practiced these skills, we tend to panic. One of the first rules of basic first aid is ‘Stay Calm!’

So where do you learn first aid? There are many centers for learning these skills. You could contact your neighborhood hospital, the police, or the Red Crescent Association and they will be able to provide you with contact
numbers and addresses. Check on the internet, in magazines like Time Out, or in the newspaper for courses which are run all around the UAE throughout the year. You could even ask the principal of your school if you could have a first aid course as part of the curriculum.

Everyone would benefit from you having a certificate in first aid. It would certainly help persuade people with your college or work applications, it would give you the calm confidence to deal with an accident, it would help your friends, relatives and the community, and above all it could save someone’s life. You never know, with basic first aid training you might even become a hero of the UAE.

Part B. Reading 2

Read the selection below. Then answer the questions.

1. While travelling along main roads in the UAE you will see signs saying, ‘Road controlled by radar.’ These signs warn drivers not to travel too fast. If they do, traffic cameras will take a picture of the car and the police will fine drivers who drive over the speed limit. These cameras are called ‘safety cameras’, ‘speed cameras’ or simply ‘traffic cameras’.
2. The first such cameras were invented in Holland by a racing driver called Maurice Gatsonides in order to measure his own speed. The company he formed developed this radar-based camera for use with ordinary road traffic, and is still the world’s largest supplier of speed camera systems. Because of this, in some countries a speed camera is sometimes called a "Gatso". At first, the cameras used film, but nowadays they almost all use digital images, and although the first cameras used radar, not all of them do so today. Other systems include the use of sensitive strips built into the road, infra-red light, or lasers.
3. Some traffic camera systems don’t just take pictures of vehicles traveling too fast at one place, but take two pictures at two points several kilometers apart, and then calculate the vehicle’s average speed. They can do this with a device that reads all vehicles’ number plates at each camera and then matches up the same numbers with the exact times that the car passed the devices. From this, they calculate how much time the car took to travel that distance and then see if this was over the speed limit.
4. There are many different types of traffic camera. Most in the UAE are mounted in boxes on poles at permanent sites, but others are small enough to be carried around and set up at different sites, while some are small enough to be held in the hand and pointed at vehicles like a gun. Their introduction has not always been welcomed by drivers, who often feel that safety issues do not justify their use. For this reason a number of studies have been made of their effect on road safety. A British government study found that road speeds dropped by seven per cent where they were introduced, with a sixteen to forty per cent drop in accidents. This appears to show that traffic cameras are effective at reducing accidents and injuries, and perhaps they should be used more widely.

Part C. Reading 3

Read the selection below. Then answer the questions.
1. There are many occasions that may call for a tent. These can range from camping in the mountains to simply spending a night in the backyard. No matter the situation, building a tent is an extremely useful skill. These are basic instructions for simple tents; more complicated tents may be more difficult, and the tent’s instructions should always be followed.
2. Survey your tent site and remove any large rocks or sticks from the area where you want to assemble the tent. This protects your tent from getting tears. If you’re in a cold area, you should stake a tarp to the ground.
3. Unpack your supplies, laying your tent out with the top up. Some companies color coordinate the poles’ ends with the corner guides or sleeves the poles go into. Small tents may be assembled with two long poles, but most tents should have two poles for the top and four poles for the legs. If you have the directions provided by the manufacturer, it’s a good idea to review them.
4. Put the poles together to make the frame of the tent. Even if you hate reading directions, at least take a look at them so you know what shape the tent is supposed to be. Tents come in a variety of shapes, the most common being domes, cones, pyramids, or house shapes. It is important that the frame is built correctly; otherwise, the cover will fit awkwardly, if it even fits at all.

5. Once the frame is put together, put the cover on it. If you assembled the frame correctly, the cover should go right on with little struggling.
6. It’s a different story if you don’t have a store bought tent; if you don’t, it will be very difficult to fabricate a tent. Since it would be nearly impossible to make a strong, suitable frame out of things you find (like sticks), it may be better to find shelter in a cave, under trees or a rock formation, or in your car (if it’s with you).

17. Which of the following would be the BEST title for this passage?

a. How to Buy a Tent?
b. How to Camp in a Desert?
c. How to Assemble a Tent?
d. How to Live in the Desert?

18. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

a. reading direction for the tent
b. different shapes of the frames
c. fitting the cover of the tent
d. clearing the tent’s site

19. What does ‘instructions’ mean in this sentence: ‘and the tent’s instructions
should always be followed.’

a. directions
b. outlines
c. arguments
d. theories

ong ago, the Earth was covered in darkness. None of the creatures living there knew what daylight looked like.

One day, all of the animals of the forest gathered together in a clearing. They wondered if it would be better to remain in darkness, or if it would be better to also have light. Deer, Chipmunk, Raccoon, Wolf, Bear, and many other creatures climbed to the top of the highest mountain. The mountain stood so tall that there were no trees on its top, and it was covered only with rocks. Millions of stars blinked in the dark sky overhead. The biggest and most powerful animal in the forest was the bear, and he was the first to reach the mountaintop. Bear stood on the highest peak, looked out over the forest below, and argued for remaining in darkness. He said that the creatures of the forest would be able to sleep better in darkness because there would be no light to keep them awake. Most of the other animals were afraid, and they agreed with Bear. Raccoon said that he did not mind the darkness because he was so smart that he could find plenty of food, even in the dark. Wolf was easy to please, too. She didn’t mind the darkness because she could howl in darkness or in light.

But one animal did stand up to Bear. Chipmunk, the smallest of the animals, argued that it would be better to have both light and dark. Chipmunk was very clever. As Bear continued to argue for darkness, she made many good arguments for light.

Slowly, the night passed. Bear grew tired of talking, but Chipmunk chattered on and on, as if she had all of the energy in the world. As the other animals dropped off to sleep, one by one, Chipmunk kept arguing. Finally, the first sunrise ever seen by the animals appeared over the top of the mountain. They woke up and were amazed by what they saw.

Chipmunk began to dance from rock to rock. Bear became angry because he didn’t get his way. He roared loudly and ran after Chipmunk. He chased Chipmunk all the way down the mountain. Bear was fast, and he reached out his giant paw to grab Chipmunk. Chipmunk got away, but not before Bear managed to scratch her back with his long claws. And that is why, to this day, you can see stripes on Chipmunk’s back!
