A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma.

A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.
B. Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.
C. Alejandro played football, for Maria went shopping.

بناء الجملة:
Building a sentence

تعرف الجملة بأنها مجموعة من الكلمات تبدأ بحرف كبير وتنتهي بــ نقطة (.) أو علامة استفهام (؟) أو علامة تعجب (!) وتشتمل الجملة على مسند Predicate ومسند إليه أو فاعل Subject وعادة يكون لها معنى مكتمل.

A sentence is a group of words, which starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (.), question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!). A sentence contains or implies a predicate and a subject. s

تشتمل الجمل على فقرات أو clauses

الفاعل في الجملة بصورة عامة هو الشخص أو الشيء الذي يقوم بالفعل وفي القواعد هو (الاسم أو الضمير الذي يبدأ الجملة). والمفعول به في الجملة هو الذي له علاقة بالفعل ولكنه لا يقوم بالفعل وإنما يستقبل الفعل، ويأتي بعد المفعول به بعد الفعل.

مثال:
طلع الولد الشجرة.

The subject in a sentence is generally the person or thing carrying out an action. The object in a sentence is involved in an action but does not carry it out, the object comes after the verb.

For example:s
The boy climbed a tree.s

إذا أردنا التحدث أكثر عن الفاعل (الولد) أو وصفه… أو التحدث أكثر عن المفعول به (الشجرة) أو وصفه، يمكننا إضافة صفة Adjective

مثال:
طلع الولد الصغير شجرة طويلة.
If you want to say more about the subject (the boy) or the object (the tree), you can add an adjective.s

For example:s
The young boy climbed a tall tree.

إذا أردنا توضيح كيفية طلوع الولد الصغير للشجرة، يمكننا إضافة ظرف أو حال…

مثال:
صعد الولد الصغير شجرة طويلة بسرعة.
If you want to say more about how he climbed the tree you can use an adverb.

For example:s
The young boy quickly climbed a tall tree.s

تصبح الجملة أكثر فائدة كلما أضافت معلومات أكثر للقارئ أو المستمع…
The sentence becomes more interesting as it gives the reader or listener more information.s

كيف نجعل الجملة كاملة المعنى؟
What makes a complete sentence? s

إذا كان ذلك سوف يساعدك، فلتتخيل الجملة على أنها هيكل عظمي يشتمل على مجموعة من العظام المختلفة؛ وهذه العظام يتم تجميعها مع بعضها لتشكيل أجزاء الجسم المختلفة. وبما أن الجمل تتكون من كلمات، فإن هذه الكلمات هي بمثابة العظام التي توضع مع بعضها البعض بطرق مختلفة لتكوين الجمل.
If it helps you, think about a sentence as if it were a skeleton, the skeleton contains various bones and these bones are put together to form different parts of the body. So are sentences formed by words, the words are the bones and they are put together in different ways to form sentences. s

الجملة البسيطة:
Simple Sentences

تشتمل الجملة البسيطة على فاعل واحد (مسند إليه) ومسند؛ وهي تعبر عن شيء واحد، فكرة أو سؤال، كما أنها تحتوي على نص واحد فقط –تتركب فقط من نص واحد مستقل (نص أساسي).
A simple sentence contains a single subject and predicate. It describes only one thing, idea or question, and has only one verb – it contains only an independent (main) clause. s

وأي نص أساسي يمكن أن يمثل جملة بمفرده لأنه يحتوي على فاعل وفعل ويعبر عن فكرة مكتملة.
مثال:
خرج علي.
Any independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
For example:s
Ali went out.. s

وحتى إذا أضفنا بعض الصفات والأحوال وبعض عبارات الجر prepositional phrases للجملة البسيطة، تبقى الجملة كما هي ولا تتحول لجملة مركبة.
مثال:
هذا الكلب الأبيض ذو الطوق الأحمر دائماً يعوي بصوت مرتفع.
Even the addition of adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases to a simple sentence does not change it into a complex sentence.s
For example:s
The white dog with the red collar always barks loudly. s

وتبقى الجملة بسيطة كذلك، حتى عندما نربط بعض الأسماء بحروف العطف؛ أو حينما نربط بعض الأفعال بحروف العطف.
مثال:
عوى الكلب وتذمر بصوت مرتفع.
Even if you join several nouns with a conjunction, or several verbs with a conjunction, it remains a simple sentence. s
For example:s
The dog barked and growled loudly. s

الجملة المركبة:
Compound Sentences
وتتكون الجمل المركبة من جملتين بسيطتين أو أكثر عن طريق ربطها بحروف العطف مثل (و) أو (لكن). يتم تكوين الجمل المركبة من أكثر من نص أساسي واحد… ويتم ربطهما من خلال إحدى أدوات عطف التساوي co-ordinating conjunctions التي تستخدم في ربط جملتين بسيطتين لهما علاقة مع بعضهما أو (نصين أساسيين متساويين من حيث الطبيعة النحوية).
مثال:
طلع القمر والشمس ذاهبة نحو الغروب. (هنا (الواو) ربطت النصين الأساسيين أو الجملتين البسيطتين).
Compound sentences are made up of two or more simple sentences combined using a conjunction such as and, or or but. They are made up of more than one independent clause joined together with a co-ordinating conjunction.
For example:s
"The sun was setting in the west and the moon was just rising."s

يمكن أن يبقى أي من النصين الأساسيين على حدة ويشكل جملة… كما نرى أدناه.
مثال:
الشمس ذاهبة نحو الغروب. طلع القمر… أو (طلع القمر (جملة)) (الشمس ذاهبة نحو الغروب (جملة)).
Each clause can stand alone as a sentence.s
For example:s
"The sun was setting in the west. The moon was just rising."s

أي من النصيين كما في الجملة، يحتوي على فعل وفاعل. وتأتي أداة ربط التساوي في نصف الجملة المركبة، وأداة الربط هنا هي التي تربط نصي (جزئي) الجملة المركبة؛ واهم تلك الأدوات هي (الواو) و(لكن).

أمثلة:
* ذهبت إلى السوق، لكن زوجي هو الذي قاد السيارة.
* ربما أشاهد الفيلم أو أزور أصدقائي.
* استمتعت صديقتي بالفيلم، لكنها لم تحب الممثل.
Every clause is like a sentence with a subject and a verb. A coordinating conjunction goes in the middle of the sentence, it is the word that joins the two clauses together, the most common are (and, or, but). s

For example:s
• I walked to the shops, but my husband drove. s
• I might watch the film, or I might visit my friends. s
• My friend enjoyed the film, but she didn’t like the actor. s

الجملة المعقدة:
Complex Sentences
الجمل المعقدة تصف أكثر من شيء واحد أو فكرة واحدة… وتشتمل على أكثر من فعل. ويتم تكوين الجمل المركبة من أكثر من نص واحد (نص أساسي يمكن أن يكون جملة لحاله ونص آخر يعتمد على النص الأساسي ولا يمكن أن يكون جملة مكتملة المعنى لحاله).
مثال:
والدتي تحب الكلاب التي لا تعوي.
(هنا استخدمنا أداة الربط (التي) لربط النص أو الجملة الاساسية والدتي تحب الكلاب مع النص الآخر الذي يعتمد على النص الأساسي لإكمال المعمنى الكلي للجملة المعقدة والنص غير الأساسي هو التي لا تعوي).
Complex sentences describe more than one thing or idea and have more than one verb in them. They are made up of more than one clause, an independent clause (that can stand by itself) and a dependent (subordinate) clause (which cannot stand by itself).s
For example:s
"My mother likes dogs that don’t bark."s
